While many areas of France are now matched by many New World wines I feel that nowhere has yet managed to capture the thrilling balance of acidity and sweetness that makes a glass of Sauternes such a lovely drink.
Sauternes still offers fantastic value for money, except arguably Yquem. It’s a labour intensive process with all the grapes being hand picked when affected by noble rot, this requires repeated pickings as not all the grapes are affected at the same time. Add to this the risk of a poor vintage, when the wrong weather conditions mean no rot and it is amazing that these wines don’t command higher prices.
